The Barcelona chair is one of the most iconic chairs of the mid-century designed by Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich and exposed at German Pavilion at the International Exposition of 1929.

A black Barcelona chair with four steel legs

Mies van der Rohe is generally recognized as one of the founding fathers of Modernism. He created his own twentieth-century architectural style furniture that has become popular including classics; in addition to the aforementioned, the Barcelona daybed and table, among others.

Their designs are based on simplicity and authentic materials such as steel and flat glass.

This chair is one of the plenty of examples of his iconic phrase “less is more”.

He took influences from early Roman folding chairs known as Curule chairs. Curule chairs where a symbol of political and military power and was adopted by European Kings.

An interesting fact about this chair is that it was created for a royal family reunion, so the intention behind it was never to be mass-produced. Also, the first time used was in Villa Tugendhat, a private residence, designed by Mies in Brno (Czech Republic).

So that gives you an idea of how authentic the design was and still is.

Is the Barcelona Chair Comfortable? | The Iconic Design Answers the Question Itself

You can look at the picture above and have a small idea that it is. The frame is made from two different steel configurations, chrome and stainless. It features a seat constructed at an upward angle, adding a v-like shape to the chair’s profile and creating symmetry and harmony.

It is supported on each side by two chrome-plated, flat steel bars. Seen from the side, the single curve of the bar forming the chair’s back and front legs crosses the S-curve of the bar forming the seat and back legs, making an intersection of the two.

“No design is possible until the materials with which you design are completely understood”

— Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

Besides, it also has dimensions that facilitate its placement in any room, office, or home. Its dimensions are:

  • Eight 75 cm (30 in)
  • Width 75 cm (30 in)
  • Depth 75 cm (30 in)

As you already know the Barcelona chair reproduction was never intended, which means that at that time he didn’t want to be mass-produced as it is difficult and expensive to manufacture. In fact, still is today.
