Always in the trends, you may expect from time to time to find some article relative to the Barcelona Chair, at the style of “Top Ten Must Have“; or one review about its origins and current popularity (Not to mention about the life and work of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe). Nevertheless, this is not that frequent with the other furniture pieces of the van der Rohe – Reich duet: The MR and MK series.
Recently, Dwell released a note where this pieces of design have a relevant place. The MR and MK series are manufactured again for several houses.
Originally manufactured by the Knoll house, the MR Chair was originally designed by van der Rohe in 1927 for the Weinseinhoff exhibit of Germany. Cantilevered, its use of tubular steel was groundbreaking at the time. Same happens with the MK Chair (“Brno Chair, or Flat Bar Chair”). Of Cantilevered design, too, this original piece has a flat steel bar strong enough to support a very comfortable padded leather seat that will make you feel the vibes of Modernism. The legacy of van der Rohe and its Barcelona Chair is still pretty much alive in the world of design.
