Frequently, people have iconic pieces in their spaces whose origin and impact in the world of design are completely unknown to them. Such is the case of the Barcelona Sofa, an iconic model present in many homes and common areas that was born from the mind of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, one of the most important names within the trends of the mid-twentieth century that imposed his brand and pointed the way for many other talented exponents of furniture design.
The Man Behind The Legend
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886 – 1969) was a German-American industrial architect and designer. He is known for being one of the pioneers of modern architecture, along with Walter Gropius, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Le Corbusier. He was an innovative architect in Germany for several years and after the arrival of Nazism, Ludwig closed his school and emigrated to the United States.
The Barcelona Sofa was first presented in 1929 at the German Pavilion during the International Exposition in Barcelona. The extraordinary good use of its materials, its dimensions and especially its characteristic scissor-like legs reminiscent of the Roman and Egyptian Empires granted him international fame to this day.
