As the story goes, Billy Wilder, renowned film director, had dreamt about a crude lounge chair out of sawhorses and plywood beams so he could relax on the set of his 1950s biography starring Jimmy Stewart as Charles Lindbergh The Spirit of St. Louis. 

For the set, the Eameses masterfully created a comfortable, fashionable Eames Lounge Chair per Wilder’s request. A few years later, Wilder was given this organic modernist masterpiece which he adored. It was meaninguly gifted by sweethearts Charles and Ray Eames as a way to say thanks and show appreciation. 

Yet another notable appearance debuted their latest contribution to the design world, the lounge chair to the public. The iconic Eames Lounge’s appearance on NBC’s Home show in 1956 showcased an interview with the Eameses, who were already highly known for their Pacific Palisades mid century marvelous home they designed and which was given historic landmark status 8 years ago.
