The Barcelona Chair is one of the most famous designs ever made. It’s characteristic “X” shape frame in shiny stainless steel and its comfortable, but sober black squared cushions, are reminiscent of the ancient Roman Empire tents and give us a sense of serene beauty and elegance, proper for a throne. Sometimes the frame of the chair is the signature firm of the model, as it happens with the Barcelona Chair and its four crossed legs.


But the Barcelona Chair is not the only model famous for its original set of legs. Let’s make a recount of 4 models of chairs, from one to four legs.


The Tulip Chair. A one leg chair by Eero Saarinen. 

Created by Eero Saarinen, the Tulip Chair, is one of the most iconic chairs ever made. It has one rounded chrome steel base (its only “leg”) and a rounded seat, mostly made of plastic fiber. The Tulip Chair has a very clean, elegant design, and it was labeled as “futurist” since its release. According to Saarinen, the Tulip Chair and Table came to the world to set it free of the chaos of multiple legs (human and wood legs) down under


One of the true masters of furniture in the XX century, Saarinen is the creator behind several legendary pieces, just like the Womb Chair. Architect of remarkable works, such as the Arco Gateway in Missouri, and the School of Law of the University of Chicago, he managed to establish a long term relationship with Knoll, where he was a prolific creator. Saarinen is actually the son of a very prestigious Finland Architect, Eliel Saarinen, and he was born in Kirkkonummi, Finland in 1910, dying in Michigan, United in 1961. Its Tulip Chair was created along with the Tulip Table, and although they work very well together, every piece is famous by itself and is used all around the world in endless decor combinations. The futuristic design of the Tulip Chair allows him to use it in a variety of spaces, from formal, to even outdoors, due to its light shape.  The Tulip Chair is a favorite of party, cocktail spaces, and even work offices. 


The MR 50 Chair (Brno Chair). A two legs chair by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.


On the other hand, the Brno Chair, created by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, was one of the first attempts to was originally made for the Tugendhat Residence in Brno, Czech Republic. If the Barcelona Chair is characterized by its “X” chrome steel frame, this chair is characterized by its “C” frame structure. It has arms in the upper side of the frame, and its seat is solid. Upholstered in leather, there are two versions of this chair: With tubular stainless steel and with flat stainless steel or chrome plated steel. The Brno Chair is known too as the MR50 Chair, and there is a late, most elaborated version named MR70, with a more structured back seat, while keeping the same principles like the MR50. The Brno Chair is now a classic furniture chair, with renditions all over the world.

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe is one of the pioneers of the Modernism and the Mid Century Modern movement. Van der Rohe has in its pocket creations like the Barcelona Chair and the Barcelona Daybed, all part of the Barcelona Collection. Architect of definitive works of the modern urban landscape of Chicago, like the Seagram Buiding and the IBM Plaza, van der Rohe has coined several quotes that had a profound impact in the Architecture and reached even the popular mainstrean, like “Less is more” or “God is in the details”. Born in what was prior known as Aquisgran, Prussia in 1886, he died in Chicago Illinois as an American Citizen with a brand new name. 


The Shell Chair. A three legs chair by Hans Wegner.

Created by Hans Wegner, a renewed Danish furniture designer, The Shell Chair is a perfect accent chair, and it stands for itself as a beautiful decorative object.  Expertly built of molded walnut plywood and oak veneer, an outstanding eco-friendly leather padded seat and back finish this iconic lounge chair. A master in the work of wood, he had the opportunity to learn as pupil of Arne Jacobsen, before he started its own company.

And finally, the iconic Barcelona Chair. An iconic “X” shape frame, constructed from a superior grade single-piece stainless steel block for ultimate durability.
